In this episode of the DMV Spotlight Show with Jon Chan, Dr. David Sherer—former anesthesiologist turned author—dives into his remarkable journey from practicing medicine for nearly four decades to becoming a voice for patient education and health awareness.
Dr. Sherer reflects on the immense responsibility anesthesiologists carry, often working behind the scenes to ensure patient safety during life-critical procedures. He shares the mental and emotional challenges of a high-stakes medical career, including the constant pressure of avoiding errors and navigating complex workplace dynamics.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Sherer discusses the importance of maintaining physical and mental well-being. From running marathons to prioritizing daily exercise and time in nature, he highlights simple yet powerful habits that contribute to long-term health.
The conversation takes a compelling turn into one of Dr. Sherer’s key passions: exposing the dangers of ultra-processed foods. Drawing from research and his book Hunger Hijack, he explains how modern diets may be disrupting hormones, fueling chronic disease, and contributing to a global health crisis.
Listeners will also hear about his transition into writing, including his novels and ambitions to bring one of his stories—Into The Ether—to the screen.

Farzad Najam: Interview with Jon Chan
Wednesday Mar 11, 2026
Wednesday Mar 11, 2026
In this conversation, host Jon Chan sits down with Dr. Farzad Najam, a board-certified cardiac surgeon with over 26 years of experience performing complex heart surgeries. Formerly the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at George Washington University Hospital, Dr. Najam has spent decades working on the front lines of healthcare.
But after years inside operating rooms and ICUs, he began to see a critical problem: healthcare training systems haven’t evolved fast enough to reduce human error.
Dr. Najam shares how medical errors account for an estimated 250,000 deaths each year in the United States, making them one of the leading causes of mortality. He believes technology can help address this challenge—not by replacing doctors, but by empowering them with better tools.
That belief led him to found VRCure, a company focused on combining virtual reality, immersive simulations, and artificial intelligence to train healthcare professionals more effectively.
Through VR-based simulations, providers can practice critical procedures like CPR, ECMO life support, and emergency interventions in realistic environments that mimic real-world stress. The goal is not just training—it’s measuring and maintaining true competency over time.
Dr. Najam explains how AI can track skill levels, predict when a provider’s competency may decline, and recommend short retraining sessions to keep their skills sharp. The system shifts healthcare from outdated certification-based training toward continuous competency monitoring, similar to how pilots regularly train in flight simulators.
The vision for the future? A world where surgeons could rehearse complex procedures using a digital twin of their patient, reducing risk and improving outcomes before the first incision is ever made.

Adam Firestone: Podcast Interview with Jon Chan
Tuesday Mar 10, 2026
Tuesday Mar 10, 2026
What does it take to solve one of the most urgent problems in modern business communication? In this episode, Jon Chan sits down with entrepreneur, engineer, attorney, educator, and cybersecurity innovator Adam Firestone to talk about secure communications, quantum risk, and the mindset required to build meaningful solutions in a changing world.
Adam shares his unique career journey—from military service and law to engineering, defense systems, cryptography, and startup leadership. He explains how his experience across industries helped him identify a major business problem: organizations still struggle to move sensitive data securely across external boundaries. As he breaks it down, today’s communication tools were not originally designed to guarantee confidentiality and integrity in transit, which leaves businesses exposed.
The conversation also explores the rise of post-quantum cryptography, why quantum computing matters to the future of cybersecurity, and how Adam and his team are approaching the problem in a practical, user-friendly way. Instead of focusing only on technical innovation, Adam emphasizes solving real-world pain points in a way that reduces friction for teams and customers.
Beyond technology, Adam shares thoughtful advice for entrepreneurs on how to identify market gaps, move from invention to innovation, and tell a compelling story that resonates with customers. He also reflects on mindset, resilience, and the importance of seeing setbacks not as roadblocks, but as forks in the road that open new opportunities.
In this episode, Jon and Adam discuss:
Adam’s path from soldier and attorney to engineer and entrepreneur
Lessons learned from working in defense, middleware, threat intelligence, and cryptography
Why secure data in transit is still a major challenge for organizations
What quantum-secure communications means in practical terms
The difference between solving a technical problem and solving a real business problem
How entrepreneurs can identify valuable opportunities in the market
Why mindset, gratitude, and reframing challenges matter in business and life

Jon Chan: Interview with Dave Dubeau

Are you a frustrated landlord?
Maybe you own a few rental properties and expected passive income… but instead you got late-night maintenance calls, tenant issues, repairs, and endless property management headaches.
In this episode, Dave sits down with Jon Chan, who experienced exactly that — and then completely changed his real estate strategy.
Jon shares how he went from owning multiple single-family rentals across several states to stepping away from being a landlord entirely and building a more passive income stream through private lending and raising capital.
What You’ll Learn
How Jon started with house hacking in 2017
Why owning more properties actually created more work, not freedom
The hidden costs and stress of managing rentals across multiple markets
Why he sold off his portfolio — even though it was cash-flowing
How he helped his mom retire using real estate income
A safer way to invest in real estate without tenants or toilets
Why relationships and education beat sales skills when raising capital
Jon’s plan to scale to $10 million in loans
Jon’s Real Estate Journey
Jon’s investing journey started with a simple idea: reduce his living expenses.
In 2017, he purchased a large home with a separate basement apartment and rented it out. The rental income covered a big portion of the mortgage — a classic house hacking strategy.
Encouraged by success, Jon scaled quickly using the BRRRR method and bought properties in:
Huntsville, Alabama
Chattanooga, Tennessee
Baltimore, Maryland
Akron, Ohio
The numbers looked great on paper — but reality was different.
Each market had different:
licensing requirements
tax rules
permits
management challenges
Soon, the administrative workload became overwhelming.
Even though the properties technically cash-flowed, maintenance expenses, repairs, and management responsibilities consumed his time and energy.
